Help us build our Mini-Eden

We’ve teamed up with the people at Touch Wood Enterprises to help bring to life the dream of our very own mini-Eden project at Playgroup.

Above all we want parents, committee members and the children themselves to play a major part in the project, especially as we finalise our initial designs, for which we already have Planning Consent and initial funding.

We will be hosting a half day, hands on workshop running from 9am until 12.30pm on Weds 7th of March, in the upstairs room of the School. Please gather outside playgroup and we can all go up together.

Leading the project for us is ex-SBPG committee-member Sarah Mclellan, who said: “Our basic design has been in an embryonic stage for a year or so. We now have a significant portion of the funding needed, but in order to raise funds for the remainder of the project and to bring it to life we need a firm, fully costed, structurally and legally sound design.”

“To acheive this, our workshop will be run by Touch Wood, who specialise in involving children and the community in both the design and construction of their projects. The meeting will be interactive, involving the children at various stages of the morning, and offers you a chance to find out about the project as well as add your own ideas to be part of the design.”

If you can’t make the workshop meeting but want to offer support or pledge funds for the project, please contact Sarah via e-mail:  Sarah.mclellan2@virgin.net

World Book Day (Thursday 1st March)

Thursday March 1st is Wold Book day.

Every child will receive a book token which can be redeemed in most book shops. Each year we like to celebrate this in playgroup by encouraging children to bring in their favourite stories to share with their friends, we are also suggesting that children can dress up as their favourite book character if they would like too, this is not compulsory, just for fun.

Finally we would like to invite parents/ grandparents in to read their favourite stories to the children.

If you would like to do this please see a member of staff so we can organise a rota of storytelling throughout the morning.

Play-leaders’ update

An update from Play Leader Jo: “All the children have settled well and we have been really busy exploring ice, feeding birds, celebrating Chinese New Year and most recently getting creative with recyclable material making models and 3d structures.”

“We no longer have a half term themes rather provocations taken from the children’s interests, observed in the previous week. Certain ideas, celebrations and topics are adult initiated, if it is felt that more knowledge in a certain area would benefit the children. I am using the black board as means of communication to let you know what is happening each week and if it is a topic which you feel you could support us in  please let us know, likewise please look around the room at our pictures and displays and in the planning book (Kept on the cupboard in playgroup) .”

“The picture cork board on the cupboard door had daily pictures detailing what we have done and finally remember to check your child’s learning journy for regular individual updates (In the wicker basket in the book corner).”

“I recently held a parent workshop about information sharing where I detailed how important this is to support continuity of care for each child. The next workshop will be on Wednesday 14th March 12.15 where we will discuss early maths skills and how you can support these at home.”

“During the playgroup session we are splitting the children into two groups daily to do focused activity sessions the 2-3’s activities tend to be more physical and are based around the individual children’s next steps these activities often take place in the hall or outside. The preschool children’s activities are more focused on Letters and sounds, number play, and activities taken form the next steps indentified by Key Persons Observations. We have had a very positive start to these sessions and the 10.30 slot seems to be an excellent time to do these as all the children are refuelled after snack! The preschool children that stay all day on a Monday are benefiting from a far less rushed lunch time and an hour of collaboration time with class 1. During this time the children get to explore class 1 and are developing confidence in this different environment which will aid their transition into school.”

“Finally, news about Forest Corner. After half term every child will be going out each week, I am going to take two groups on a Wednesday morning. The younger children (2-3) will go out between 9.15 -10.30 and the preschool children will go out from 10.30 -12.00 . Doing it this way means that every child can go out every week keep the continuity of the session which is beneficial to their overall development and confidence within playgroup. Please could children come to playgroup suitable dressed on a Wednesday with plenty of warm layers , hats, gloves , waterproofs (we have some spare sets in playgroup) and wellys we do venture out in all weathers I will be writing a duty rota at the end of this week, so please look out for these in your pigeon holes, remember  duty is voluntary however a worthwhile and extremely beneficial way of finding out about how playgroup runs , it is also a way of lending support to your playgroup there are always jobs to be done so if you have a skill which you are keeping hidden please let us know !”

“The annual parent questionnaire will be sent out before half term, please take a little time to fill this in as it really helps us to recognise the next steps in our practice and your views are vital to us continually developing our playgroup.”

ALL DAY Mondays

As of 9th January, St Briavels Playgroup is offering full day playgroup sessions for pre-school children.

Play Leader Jo George has been working closely with the Reception Teacher at Saint Briavels Primary School, Mrs Arnold, to make sure all the youngsters starting school in September 2012 are familiar with the learning environment.

From now on, until they start school, the pre-schoolers will be joining Mrs Arnold in Reception Class every Monday afternoon.

“This is a fantastic experience for little ones starting school in September – it means they’ll be used to the class room and the teacher and so the transition from playgroup to ‘big school’ next year will be seamless.” said St Briavels Playgroup Committee Chair Jane Hall.

JAN 2012 news roundup

Our next Committee meeting is on the 23rd January at 8pm at The George Inn, St Briavels – please make every effort to attend: all interested parties welcome.

Thanks to the many people who helped our Christmas party go so well. Jo, Liz, Sally and Hannah did a great job with the play (their costumes were fantastic!)

Also thanks to everyone who donated a raffle prize and bought tickets – our Christmas raffle raised £35 – and thanks to Keith Harvey who helped put a smile on the children’s faces!

More thanks also to Barry Hutchinson from Hamiltons Chartered Surveyors who organised and ran our Christmas Charity Auction.  We raised £2000 towards the running costs of St Briavels Playgroup – a fantastic effort and thanks to everyone who supported it.

Yet more thanks go out to Ele and Matt Taylor from the Chepstow Book Shop for assisting with Santa’s presents.

And finally! The final thanks in this roundup goes to Pam and Iain Reid who sent a letter around to local residents asking for spare change for playgroup – their efforts raised over £60 in loose change and brought in donations of an additional £130.  In particular we’d like to thanks to Mr Duggan, Mr and Mrs Steadman and Mr and Mrs Williams for their generosity.

Auction of Promises 2011

SOLD! To the highest bidder!

Get ready for the return of our popular fund-raiser the SBPG Promises Auction. Last year’s event was a massive success and great fun.

This year’s event will be at The George pub in the village, on Thursday 8th December, starting 7.30pm.

Event organiser, Barry Hutchinson (Director at Hamiltons Chartered Surveyors) explained why he wanted to organise the event: “I was devastated to find out recently that the wonderful educational establishment that is St Briavels Playgroup is under extreme and sustained
financial pressure.

Adding, “My son, Henry, attends several days per week and has developed tremendously since starting and, I am convinced, will have the best possible grounding for starting school in September next year.  The Playgroup is a valuable and professionally managed resource which I have pledged my personal support to.

Last year’s event gave the Playgroup (which is run as a Charity) a significant boost in funding and, in austere times, this year’s event is probably even more important. But it is also good fun at the time of  seasonal goodwill and, as Barry asserts it might offer “an opportunity to acquire a late and perhaps unusual Christmas gift bargain and, importantly, have a good craic!

NOTHING WITHOUT THINGS TO BID FOR AND BIDDERS!
But an event like this is nothing without donations to bid on and, of course bidders.

Barry says: “I will organise the whole event but the only thing I require from you is your support, both in terms of donated lots and attendance.  There are no rules for the introduction of lots and everybody will have an opportunity to contribute, whether it be a couple of hours garden maintenance, a basket of ironing, a box of seasonal vegetables or a long weekend in the Cornish family cottage.  I have sold far more adventurous things (the ironing in hotpants for example!) and will leave it to your inventive imagination!  If possible, I try and avoid reserves (the lowest price at which a lot can be sold) at charity events but, for exceptional items, will consider it.

This event is dependent upon you so all I will ask at this stage is that you email or telephone me very soon to discuss what you might be able to give and, that you forward this email to anybody that you think may be interested (relatives, friends and local businesses).  I will be drawing from my own contacts but experience suggests that the more we all put in, the more Playgroup will get out.  I am aspiring to raise sufficient funds to ‘balance the books’ and leave some for the inevitable ‘rainy days’ ahead so please do help me out in any way you can.

If you have questions, promises and items to donate you can e-mail Barry directly via barry.hutchinson@hamiltons.co.uk
